According to election officials, Tolani filed nominations on Saturday for the post of Mayor in Indore Municipal corporation. The election will be held on July 6. Tolani is called Indore’s Dhartipakad which means one who clings on to the earth. The word suggests both tenacity and defiance. There are many such Dhartipakads across the country. Many of them fight hundreds of elections but lose their deposits as they get only a few votes.
Yet, they are a never-die-spirit. Tolani is one of them. He says that it will be his 18th election as a candidate. Tolani has already contested Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections but lost security deposit every time. According to him, his father Metharam Tolani fought various elections for 30 years and, after his death in 1988, he followed the tradition. Once he fielded his wife Laxmi Tolani as mayoral candidate, when the seat was reserved for women.
