Thiruvananthapuram: Eighty-eight-year-old jumbo Tara was honoured on the World Elephant Day on Friday. Tara has been with the Guruvayoor Devaswom for the past 64 years and treated like a child. Every year on August 12, World Elephant Day is observed to honour pachyderms, which have been part of Indian culture since ages.
Babu, the Mahaut, has been taking care of Tara for the past 12 years. He is always by her side. According to him, her age is 88 years and she eats dates, rice and pulses. He says as part of the World Elephant Day Tara is set to be awarded. As she has grown, she finds it difficult to lie down, otherwise, she is fit and still captivates people.

She is very gentle and obeys the command, but because of age, she has some hearing and visual problems, says Babu.
