You need not make fake promises, just assurance that you are there and will be there with her or him whenever they want in life will itself make them feel confident about the relationship. Try being a friend rather than being a wife or husband all the time. There has to be more empathy and compassion in your relationship that will help you both understand each other’s viewpoints well even in dire situations.
