Today is International Day of Charity observed on the occasion of spreading awareness and initiatives related to social responsibility all over the world. The day is celebrated to bring all together in supporting charitable activities and causes. The day has been introduced by the United Nations in the loving memory of Mother Teresa who died on 5 September 1997 at the age of 87. Mother Teresa is known for doing humanitarian work. Helping the needy people was her motto in life.

The day can be seen as a beautiful opportunity to start taking part in charity events and work towards the welfare of the weakest members of society. The weakest population includes the disabled, elderly, poor people in society. If you want to make really a difference in someone’s life then first know yourself properly and find out ways in which you can help others.

Some people may not even reveal that they need your assistance but then it is up to you how you can add value to their lives. You need to really know the genuineness of whom you are helping and what is their actual need. For example, if a friend of yours doesn’t do their homework and you write on their behalf then that is not charity. However, if you give your handwritten notes to someone who doesn’t grasp the concepts of what you learn in the lectures, then it is a help to someone who is really in need.
If someone is out of a job and doesn’t work the whole day and you keep helping that person thinking that you are doing good work, then it is wrong. But if you are helping disabled people who cannot do the work on their work and need assistance in their everyday needs, then it is charitable work. If you donate funds to an already established NGO for conducting fun activities, then also it is okay. But if you lookout for an NGO that feeds the poor and educates the needy, and is struggling with funds to manage their work, then it is really a noble work to donate your time or money there.
