Yashpal Arya Quits BJP; Joins Congress

Yashpal Arya has left the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and joined the Congress party in New Delhi. In the presence of senior party leader Harish Rawat and All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary KC Venugopal, the former BJP leaders were inducted into the party.

This comes months before the state’s next assembly elections. Notably, after leaving the Congress, both leaders, Yashpal and Sanjiv Arya, joined the BJP ahead of the 2017 Uttarakhand assembly elections.

AICC General Secretary Venugopal expressed his delight at the accession of the two leaders, saying that both have returned home. He also mentioned that Yashpal and Sanjiv had a meeting with Rahul Gandhi this morning.

Yashpal had previously stated that he was dissatisfied with then-chief minister Harish Rawat’s way of functioning and felt overlooked inside the party, prompting him and his son to leave the Congress and join the BJP. Meanwhile, assembly elections are set to take place in Uttarakhand next year.
