Riyadh: Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has announced to build a city that would be car free, where carbon emissions would be zero.
The 170-km long project has been named ‘The Line’. ‘The Line’ will be part of the 500 billion dollar Neom project.
Announcing it on TV on Sunday, Bin Salman said that the construction of the scheme will begin in the first quarter of this year.
According to the Crown Prince of the oil-rich country, there will be a million people living in an eco-city with zero cars, zero roads and zero carbon emissions. It will have facilities like schools, health centers and greenery.
The Saudi Crown Prince claimed that we need to change the concept of the traditional city to be the city of the future.
The Neom Special Economic Zone, on the coast of the Red Sea, will span an area of 26,500 square kilometers and touch its borders with Jordan and Egypt.
By 2010, this dream project of the Saudi Crown Prince will bring about 48 billion dollars in the country’s GDP. Saudi Arabia is the world’s major crude oil exporter, and is among the most polluting countries.
According to the report received, ‘The Line’ is being planned to travel on foot and plans for future high-speed transportation systems.
Experts have already expressed apprehensions over the Neom scheme, which is said to end Saudi Arabia’s economy’s dependence on oil.
