Yangon: The number of pro-democracy protesters who died in the ongoing protests against the military coup in Myanmar in February this year has risen to over 500. A monitoring group gave this information on Tuesday. According to the report, 14 other people lost their lives at the hands of security forces on Monday and the Assistant Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) has so far put the nationwide death toll at 510.
The worsening situation in Myanmar is worrying the international community. Especially after the death of 110 people in a single day on 27 March, the concern has increased considerably. The European Union has called it a ‘Day of Terror’. At the same time, US President Joe Biden has also given a statement expressing concern over the incident.
Recent major atrocities on democracy supporters have been seen in Yangon’s South Dugan Township. People who see a creepy sight with their eyes here say that during the last two days, the army has carried out a special campaign in the area, which has caused the entire locality to panic.
The General Strike Committee of Nationalities, one of the main groups of protests, urged Myanmar’s ethnic armed groups to stand on the side of the protesters on Monday, following which three such groups took cognizance of the call on Tuesday. In a joint statement, he strongly condemned the military’s actions and said that they share their sympathies with the family members of those fighting for Myanmar.
