Despite continuing phase II and III trials of Covaxin for the 2-18 age range, India is expected to have an indigenous Covid-19 vaccine for children by September, according to Priya Abraham, head of the Indian Council of Medical Research’s National Institute of Virology Pune.
Covaxin, India’s first indigenous Covid-19 vaccine, was co-developed by the ICMR and Bharat Biotech, a vaccine company in Hyderabad. Covaxin is one of three vaccinations available in India as part of the Covid-19 national immunization program. Covishield from the Serum Institute of India and the Russian Sputnik V are the other two.
Covaxin was authorized for emergency use in India by the Drugs Controller General in January. The controller is now considering an application for emergency usage authorization. The vaccination study for Zydus Cadila is also ongoing. This may be used for youngsters as well, and it will be made available,” Abraham added.

She added that research on booster doses has been conducted in several countries and that at least seven different vaccinations have been tested. “This is due to a concerning vaccination disparity between high- and low-income nations. However, booster proposals will undoubtedly be forthcoming in the future.”
According to Abraham, there are no safety issues with combining various Covid-19 vaccinations. She stated that they were investigating the phenomena and will be ready to provide more information in a few days.
Abraham emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating that tests conducted at NIV have proven that the vaccinations in use are effective against the variations, noting antibodies created in the bodies of those vaccinated. According to her, the efficacy of antibodies has been observed to be lowered by two to three times in the case of variations. ” Vaccines may have a lower effectiveness, but they are critical in preventing dangerous diseases that can cause patients to be hospitalised and even die. So, regardless of the version, the vaccination has proven to be effective against all of them, including the Delta form. As a result, there should be no reservations.”
