Beijing: 18 workers died due to high levels of carbon monoxide in a coal mine in China. The local official gave this information on Saturday. Xinhua, a government communications agency, said the incident occurred at 5 pm on Friday evening at the Dioshuidong Coal Mine in Yogchuan District of Chongqing Municipal Corporation.
According to Xinhua, the rise in carbon monoxide levels has confirmed the deaths of 18 workers. According to the news, rescue workers including police and fire department officials are trying to reach the part of the mine where the workers are stranded. The cause of the accident is being investigated.
The local emergency management department said that mining began in the year 1975 from the Diaoshuidong coal mine and was handed over to private hands in 1998. Its annual production capacity is 1,20,000 tonnes of coal. According to Xinhua, in 2013, the same mine had leaked poisonous hydrogen sulfide, killing three workers and injuring two others.
