In his memoir ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing’, which was published almost a year before his death, Perry shared details about himself before he was featured on the successful ’90s sitcom and beyond. He also wrote about his struggle with addiction and the price he had to pay for leading a life of fame.
In his memoir, Perry made some shocking revelations. Let’s discuss some of them. Perry wrote that his mother started working as a press aide for former prime minister of Canada Pierre Trudeau, and shifted to Toronto when he was 10. He made a shocking claim that he had beaten up a young Justin Trudeau, Pierre’s son and now Canadian prime minister.
Perry remembered that it was at the age of 14 that he started the habit of drinking and found a sense of peace. When he was 15 years old, he shifted from Canada to Hollywood as he wanted to reconnect with his father. He recollected how he got the disease of drinking six vodka tonics every night from Hollywood. However, he accepted to not be a high-functioning alcoholic like his dad.
Being close to American actor and musician River Phoenix, with whom he featured in ‘A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon’, Perry was devastated after Phoenix passed away at the young age of 23.
Perry in his memoir had written that he had a crush on ex-co-star Jennifer Aniston. Perry asked Aniston out three years before Friends first aired in 1994.
In his book, Perry admitted to having had a big-time crush on Valerie Bertinelli, who was married to one of the most prominent rock stars on the planet, Eddie Van Halen.
By 2019, when Perry was 49, he almost died after his colon burst from opioid overuse and sadly, he was in a coma for two weeks. He even was hospitalized for five months. In January 2022, Perry had to undergo his 14th surgery to do with opiate abuse and was full of guilt about his earlier relationships.
Although the official reason for Perry’s death is still being checked, it was a really tragic incident to lose a person like him. After all, the ‘Friends’ star is famous for bringing joy and laughter to millions of people with his role as Chandler Bing.
