Don’t follow others when taking up a specialization

As the SSC and HSC results are out, I am sure you would be exploring a lot of options for your future career. Many times you would have got suggestions from your parents, relatives, and even friends about how a particular specialization subject will help you earn a lot of bucks and get that dream home that you or your parents are aiming for. You might have also got career expert advice on how you can even grab that dream job in an international location or organization so that you can repay all the loans of your family and have a “Well-settled” life.

When it comes to advise, everyone is sitting out there to give you what they know the best. Say, if you take up science, there will be relatives who would demean the specialization and recommend you to take up commerce because business (MBA) is what sells in the market nowadays. Same way, if you plan to take up commerce, you would get suggestions to take up science because the majority of the MBAs don’t have white-collared corporate jobs or their businesses don’t scale up like the Tatas and Ambanis.

So, with so much confused thinking, you may end up taking anything that your parents or close friends suggest to you, thus making you take the first step to lead a dissatisfied life throughout your journey. So, why bother others when you can do your self-analysis and also your career analysis using the online tools and little reflection on what suits you the best and what not.

If you are someone who likes to follow the herd community, then go by what others say. But if you really want to make a change in society and your life as well, then follow what your heart and brain tell you. Say, if you are great at mathematics and love coaching others, instead of considering an engineering degree, you can take up a teaching job wherein your passion for teaching maths to others can be fulfilled and you also earn the required money to make a decent living.

Again, if you get questions from your peers or friends or relatives about what your hobby cannot give you, you show them examples of what it can give you like life satisfaction, the ability to work for yourself, ability to progress in your own pace and time, happiness to live each day of your life following what you dream to become in life. When you show confidence in your career decisions, that’s when the effect of career suggestions on you will reduce drastically.

You will move the career ladder by defining your own rules and ways of success. Your life journey would become an example to others who may have similar grades or backgrounds like yours to trust themselves and work towards the journey to success. You will eventually earn the self-esteem to stay consistent in your career no matter how situations turn against you. Like, if you lose that teaching job from a school or college due to unforeseen circumstances, you can still carry on with your coaching responsibilities by setting up your own online school or institute.
