The coronavirus pandemic is raging havoc across the country. We are all set to enter into 2022 but the new variants and mutations are keeping everyone on their toes. The newest variant of concern is Omicron and it is already spreading like wildfire in India. In the light of this new mutation and the growing number of cases, the government has announced booster doses for front line workers and those above the age of 60.
What is a booster dose?
With the new infections on the rise, the government is looking at giving an additional dose to healthcare/frontline workers and those above the age of 60 with co-morbidities. Is the booster dose different from the precautionary dose?
In the wake of growing number of cases, Prime Minister Modi addressed the nation on December 25. During this address, he used the term precautionary dose as opposed to what is being termed as a booster dose. It is believed that what he meant was a supplement dose for the healthcare and frontline workers and also for people that are vulnerable.
However, the reason why he coined the term precautionary dose is still not clear. Some epidemiologists believe that since there is not enough data for booster shots, hence used the term precautionary. Others believe that since the government is going to administer the same vaccine for the third dose hence this terminology is being used. It is believed that one will have more clarity on this in the days to come.
From when can a person get a booster or precautionary shot?
Prime Minister Modi has announced that those eligible can get the shot from January 10, 2022
Who all are eligible for the booster dose?
As of now, this precautionary shot is only being administered to frontline workers or healthcare workers. People over the age of 60 but with co-morbidities can also register for booster or precautionary dose. As per the information available at the moment, there is no directive issued on which all co-morbidities will be included. Furthermore, one will have to carry a certificate from a registered medical practitioner. On December 28, the centre clarified that this certificate is not to prove co-morbidity. It further went on to add that the doctor must be consulted before taking this additional shot.
Another important criterion for the booster or precautionary dose will be the gap. As per the guidelines share this dose will be administered 9-12 months after the second dose.
It is also shared that people on election duty in the poll-bound states will be treated as frontline workers and thus be eligible for this extra shot.
