What is Old Man Worry?

Concept of the DayWhat is Old Man Worry?

Date:

Worry is a silent killer. Old Man’s Worry is not just restricted to an old man worrying. But in fact, the term states that when a person of any age group keeps worrying continuously, he is sure to become an old man soon. His hair will start falling or greying due to the excess habit of worrying. Worrying always can also develop health issues that can reduce the age of a person and that’s why the term is called Old Man Worry.

For example, Ariv was just 16 years old when she joined a computer course in the first year of her college studies. She kept trying hard to learn the basics of the computer but the technology was too difficult for her to understand. She kept failing in the course which made her worry. Her worry increased so much that she didn’t appear for the computer exams in her college studies.

Her parents entered the college to speak to her Computer teacher and explain the situation of how stressed Ariv is whenever she has to use a computer. She kept saying that she fails in using the technology. Her excess worry failed her despite learning the concepts of Computers by heart. Despite the intervention of the Computer teacher, she developed a fear of not being able to live up to the expectations to use a computer.

Thus, her teacher explained how Ariv has developed a sort of mental health issue, which is also called Old Man’s Worry. Ariv, although young, was paranoid whenever she saw the computers and lacked the confidence to perform the same. Ariv’s parents were encouraged to take a computer class with Ariv so that she doesn’t feel dejected when she doesn’t understand the keys to use and operate the same.

When Ariv was made to understand that things are quite normal to not know certain things and not remember them despite being given proper training, Ariv’s worries got reduced. She learned the computers at her own pace and developed confidence over a span of many years to use the technology. Ariv’s parents also supported her in the decision to take up Arts as a stream because she was more fascinated to do things with her hands rather than depending on technology to get things done.

Thus, it is wrong to say that Old Man’s Worry always comes for the older generation but it can occur to anyone at any point in time. Another example of a middle-aged man who was in his 50s. Appu was working in his office when he felt giddy and collapsed at his desk. When Appu’s colleague helped him get consciousness, they rushed him to a nearby hospital wherein he was checked to suffer from the problem of vertigo.

It is a fact that as one ages, his physical health also declines. But Appu developed the habit of worrying as he had a wife and two kids to look after. He had a house and no debts but his children were too young to know about his health issues. Appu decided not to share his health issues with others. However, Appu kept worrying inside his mind, thus attracting more physical health issues. When Appu’s doctor spoke to him, he told him that he is worrying like an old man and he should give up the habit as it will affect his physical health drastically.
