And now it is totally official news. Tata Group is all set to start production of the Apple iPhone in India for both domestic and global markets. The announcement was made by Union Minister of State for Electronics & Technology, Rajeev Chandrasekhar on X, a social networking platform earlier known as Twitter on 27 October 2023.

So, officially, Tata India will be the first homegrown iPhone maker. This is after Wistron Corporation agreed to sell a plant in the southern part of the nation to the Tata Group.

A recent meeting with the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer Wistron came up with the sale deal of Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Private Ltd. at a cost of $125 million. Apple’s iPhones are mostly assembled by Taiwanese manufacturing companies such as Pegatron Corp. and Foxconn Technology Group.
“Now within just two and a half years, Tata Companies will now start making iPhones from India for domestic and global markets from India. Congratulations to the Tata team for taking over Wistron operations.” wrote Chandrasekhar on X while announcing the launch of the project.
“Thank you Wistron for your contributions, and great going for Apple in building a global supply chain from India with Indian companies at its helm,” the union minister also said.
“Ministry of Electronics & IT stands fully in support of growth of Global Indian Electronics companies that will in turn support global Electronic brands that want to make India their trusted manufacturing & talent partner and to realize PMs goal of making India a global electronics power,” he further added.
After all the relevant parties sign the related documents then the transaction will go ahead to obtain the necessary legal formalities. Wistron will also do the needful after the approvals.
As per a report on Bloomberg in July 2023, Tata Group was planning to take up an agreement to obtain a factory from a supplier of Apple Inc. The idea was to come up with iPhones manufactured in India.
So, this news will really come as a surprise and happiness for all the iPhone fans out there who eagerly wait for Apple Inc. to come up with new models every few months.
Interestingly, Tata Group has taken this initiative to make globally renowned products in India by investing in companies that specialize in making such products.
