New Delhi: The Congress continued to tear into Ghulam Nabi Azad who recently resigned from the party and launched a new outfit in Jammu and Kashmir, but Assam Chief Minister Himant Biswa Sarma was compared with Mir Jafar on Monday. Mir Jafar was a nobleman of the mid-18 century. He sided with the British to defeat Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daula. India lost the Battle Plassey in 1757 because of his treachery. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh made such comparison on Monday.

At a protest in New Delhi against Sarma by party leaders from Assam, Ramesh said, “He is not only Assam Chief Minister… He is the villain of BJP and asked to finish Congress, after getting everything from Congress.. if somebody is like Mir Jafar, its Himanta Biswa Sharma, there is one more Mir Jafar in Jammu and Kashmir, but he is Mir Jafar of the North East.” His reference to ‘Mir Jafar’ of Jammu and Kashmir was to Ghulam Nabi Azad who recently resigned from the Congress.
