A teenager who allegedly posed online as Jay Singh Rathore and raised money by claiming that his younger sister urgently needed eye treatment has been arrested by Agra Police in Uttar Pradesh.
The case had attracted widespread attention on X after the fundraiser went viral, with users contributing money towards what was presented as treatment for a 12-year-old girl at risk of losing her eyesight.
Agra Police identified the accused as Ajayveer Singh alias Jai Singh Rathore and said he allegedly used false medical claims and forged documents to seek money from the public through crowdfunding.
Police Say Fake Medical Documents Were Used
According to Police Commissionerate Agra, a complaint was received against Ajayveer Singh alleging that he falsely claimed his 12-year-old sister was suffering from a serious eye condition.
Police said he allegedly prepared forged treatment-related documents and used them to collect money online.
The Bah police station took cognisance of the complaint, registered a case under relevant legal provisions and arrested the accused. Further legal proceedings are underway.
Fundraiser Claimed Sister Was at Risk of Losing Eyesight
The controversy began after an account using the name Jay Singh Rathore appealed for financial help for his younger sister’s treatment.
In posts that circulated widely on social media, he claimed to be a 16-year-old boy whose 12-year-old sister was suffering from glaucoma and vitreous haemorrhage and needed urgent treatment.
The appeal included payment details and medical documents purportedly linked to her treatment.
Within about a day, the account claimed that more than Rs 1.5 lakh had been raised. A screenshot circulated online showing an amount of around Rs 1,58,282.
Several fundraiser-related posts were later deleted, with the account claiming that sufficient money had already been received and that further donations were no longer required.
Shroff Eye Centre Flags Allegedly Fake Documents
Questions over the fundraiser intensified after Shroff Eye Centre, which had been named in the appeal, flagged concerns over the documents being circulated.
The hospital warned that someone had allegedly created a fake patient record, prescription and treatment estimate using its letterhead.
The warning prompted donors and other social-media users to question the authenticity of the fundraiser.
The hospital also urged people to exercise caution so that others would not become victims of similar alleged fraud.
Explanation Changed During X Spaces
As scrutiny grew, users confronted the person behind the account during discussions on X Spaces.
During one such interaction, he reportedly claimed that the money was actually intended for his father’s treatment rather than his sister’s eye surgery, prompting further questions over the original appeal.
The controversy subsequently became one of the most discussed topics on X, with donors demanding explanations and refunds.
Promised to Return Donations
On September 23, the account said that the money collected from donors would be returned.
The person behind the account claimed that refunds were being delayed because of a temporary banking limit and asked donors to wait.
Two days later, Agra Police announced the arrest in connection with allegations of false medical claims, forged documents and fraudulent crowdfunding.
Police are now proceeding with the case under the relevant legal provisions, while the exact amount collected, how the funds were used and other circumstances surrounding the alleged fraud remain part of the investigation.
