Two 21-year-old candidates have made their entry into Rajasthan’s civic politics after winning council seats in Jaipur and Thanagazi in the recently held urban local body elections.
Congress candidate Faiz Hassan and BJP candidate Neha Sharma, both aged 21, emerged victorious in their respective constituencies, bringing a new generation of representatives into the state’s municipal bodies.
Faiz Hassan Wins Jaipur Ward 71
In Jaipur, Congress candidate Faiz Hassan won Ward 71 of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation.
Hassan defeated Independent candidate Mohammad Salim, who secured 5,256 votes, while BJP candidate Nisha Gaur finished third in the contest.
At just 21, Hassan’s victory has made him one of the young faces entering Rajasthan’s local political landscape.
Former Journalist Neha Sharma Wins in Thanagazi
In Alwar district’s Thanagazi municipality, 21-year-old BJP candidate Neha Sharma registered a victory over her Congress rival by 101 votes.
Her victory margin was reportedly the highest among BJP candidates elected from the Thanagazi municipality.
Before entering electoral politics, Neha worked as a journalist for nearly four years and covered issues related to public concerns.
Following her election victory, she is also being discussed as a possible contender for the post of Thanagazi municipal chairperson.
Gen Z Finds Space in Local Politics
The victories of Faiz Hassan and Neha Sharma have put the spotlight on the entry of younger candidates into grassroots politics.
Despite representing rival political parties, both 21-year-olds will now serve in Rajasthan’s civic bodies and take on responsibilities connected with local governance and public issues.
Their victories come at a time when younger candidates are beginning to find greater space in municipal and grassroots-level politics.
BJP Finishes Ahead of Congress Statewide
In the wider Rajasthan urban local body elections, the BJP emerged ahead of the Congress in the number of wards won.
The ruling BJP secured 4,171 wards, while the Congress won 3,597, giving the BJP a lead of 574 wards over its principal rival.
Following the results, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma described the BJP’s performance as a “historic victory”.
He said the verdict reflected the public’s confidence in the BJP’s governance and development agenda.
Sharma credited the result to the work carried out by the state government over the past two-and-a-half years as well as the party’s outreach among voters.
While the statewide results highlighted the continuing contest between the BJP and Congress, the victories of Faiz Hassan and Neha Sharma also brought attention to a different political trend the arrival of Gen Z representatives in Rajasthan’s local governance.
