Tamil Nadu Police have registered a case against Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin over a controversial remark made during a public speech. Many people have interpreted the comment as a reference to actor Trisha, leading to widespread criticism across the state.
The case was registered on Tuesday, and police were seen outside Udhayanidhi Stalin’s residence in Chennai. Meanwhile, he has approached the Madras High Court seeking anticipatory bail. The court is expected to hear his plea later in the day.
Controversy Began During Cauvery Speech
The controversy started when Udhayanidhi Stalin was speaking about the Cauvery water dispute and criticising Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay over the issue.
During the speech, someone in the audience shouted “Trisha, Trisha.” Udhayanidhi responded with a remark that many people described as a sexual innuendo. The comment was widely criticised as disrespectful towards women.
Strong Reactions from Political Parties
The ruling TVK strongly condemned the remark.
TVK leader Aadhav Arjuna accused Udhayanidhi of lowering the standard of political debate. He said the speech was vulgar, full of double-meaning comments, and insulting to women.
TVK spokesperson Felix Gerald also criticised the remark and questioned whether Udhayanidhi would repeat the same words in front of his own children.
BJP Demands Action
The BJP also strongly criticised the comment.
Tamil Nadu BJP chief spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy called the remark “disgusting, vulgar and shameful” and demanded Udhayanidhi’s arrest.
Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai also criticised the speech, while BJP leader Khushbu Sundar said Udhayanidhi should publicly apologise to actor Trisha.
DMK Defends Udhayanidhi
The DMK defended its leader and said the controversy was being used to divert attention from the Cauvery water issue.
Former minister T. Mano Thangaraj said the criticism was politically motivated and urged opponents to focus on important public issues instead of creating unnecessary controversies.
The case has now reached the legal stage, with the Madras High Court set to hear Udhayanidhi Stalin’s anticipatory bail plea.
