New Delhi: Senior lawyer of the Supreme Court Dushyant Dave bade a tearful farewell to outgoing Chief Justice NV Ramana who retired on Friday. Dave called him citizens’ judge. Dave broke into tears before the ceremonial bench with Chief Justice NV Ramana, Justices UU Lalit and a room full of lawyers. Dave said, “You have been a citizens’ judge. And, I speak on behalf of the citizens of this country… you upheld the rights; you upheld the Constitution… your lordship excelled out expectations… you did what really is expected to be done by this institution,” and then he broke down.

Dave further said that he is transferring this court to the great hands of Justice UU Lalit and the judges who were to come after. Bidding farewell to Chief Justice Ramana, senior lawyer Kapil Sibal said that even in times of instability, he ensured dignity and integrity of the court and held the government responsible to give a response. Attorney General KK Venugopal said, “This is not the rage when a CJI should be retiring.”
