Dispute over reciting Kalma in Kanpur school kicks up a row

Date:

Kanpur: A dispute cropped up at the Florets School in Kanpur on Monday when its management allegedly forced the children to recite ‘Kalma’ as part of its morning prayers, official sources said. When the parents of a few children and some Hindu outfits came to know of it, they staged a sit-in outside the school and lodged a complaint at the police station. The cops rushed to the spot and asked the school management to stop this practice.

Nevertheless, according to the school management, the students have been chanting the Gayatri Mantra, the Guruvani, the Islamic and other religious verses as part of the morning prayers for decades, but the right-wing activists have suddenly objected to it. Principal of the school Sumit Makhija has said that only the national anthem will be sung on the school premises as part of morning prayers.
