Trees, Electric Poles Uprooted In Maharashtra
Mumbai: Cyclone Nisarga has made landfall near Alibaug on the Maharashtra coast with super-speed wind of ranging between 120-140 kmph. The “process” will be completed by about 4 pm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. Gusty winds, torrential rains, and high tide marked the arrival of the severe cyclonic storm.
The speed of the storm can be up to 110 kilometers per hour. People in Mumbai have been instructed not to leave the house by Thursday afternoon. The administration has shifted around 10,000 people, including corona virus patients, to safer places. In the wake of the storm, the Central Railway changed the routes of many trains and changed the timings of many trains. In Gujarat, 50 thousand people have been evacuated to safe places. Rescue workers in both states are ready to deal with any situation.
Amid fear of tress uprooting due to cyclonic storm ‘Nisarga’, all carnivorous animals in Mumbai zoo have been shifted to holding areas in their enclosures to keep them safe from rain and strong winds, an official said on Wednesday.
A zoo emergency response team is on alert to avoid any untoward incident, he said. Since the city has been experiencing rain, authorities at the Veermata Jijabai Udyan, also popularly known as Byculla Zoo which is spread over an area of 50 acres,are taking all steps to protect the animals against the rough weather and avoid any damage due to tree falls.
