Tonk: Eight members of a family were killed and five others injured when their jeep was rammed by a trailer from the rear in this district of Rajasthan, police said on Wednesday.
The dead included two women and as many children.
Police sources said that one Soni family from Rajgarh in Madhya Pradesh was returning home after paying obeisance at Khatushyam ji, the famous religious place of Sikar district when the incident took place at around 0230 hrs last night on the Jaipur-Kota National Highway-12.
Their jeep was hit by a trailer coming from behind following which it got stuck between a culvert wall and the trailer.
While eight people lost their lives, the injured were rushed to Sadat Hospital in Tonk which referred them to Jaipur.
The victims were residents of Jeerapur village in Rajgarh district of Madhya Pradesh. On getting the news, the police administration rushed to the spot and started the relief work.
Police said a three-year-old girl escaped unhurt. The driver and operator of the trailer sped the spot after the accident.
The driver of the jeep survived but he also being absconding.
