China’s instant messaging app WeChat is making its censorship rules stronger than ever before. Owned by the Chinese technology company Tencent, the app has over 1.1.5 billion users across the globe.
A recent report says that the messages sent and received by international users are being checked very carefully to understand if they are politically sensitive or not. An algorithm has been set up for the same.
For example, if a protected document is first sent from a non-China-registered account to non-China-registered accounts, before sending it to a China-registered account, they are censored in real time when sent to a China-registered account, said the researchers in a report.
China has made stricter cyber laws since March 2020 when the Coronavirus outbreak became a worldwide pandemic. Just like how Facebook is globally used, similarly WeChat is being used in China for instant messaging, mobile payments, access to news and other apps.
