Landslide in Myanmar’s jade mining hub, 113 people dead

Yangon: At least 113 people died in a landslide on Thursday in a stone mine in the Kachin state of Myanmar. People said that more than 200 people were missing.

The Ministry of Information citing the local fire service has given the number of dead at 50. The accident took place in Hepkant in Kachin state. The region is north of Myanmar’s largest city of Yangon and is the world’s largest jade mine industry.

Local representative of Hepkant, Khin Maung Miant, said that the local rescue service told them that 99 bodies have been recovered so far and 54 injured people have been taken to three hospitals. At the same time, on the website of the 7 Day News Journal it was previously reported that 200 people are missing. However, other immediate information regarding this incident has not been made available. Such accidents often occur at mining sites in Myanmar.
