Gunmen attack in Ethiopia, killing more than 90 people

Addis Ababa: More than 90 people were killed in an attack by some unidentified gunmen in the western Benishangul-Gumuz province of the East African country of Ethiopia. According to media reports, the attackers attacked in residential areas in Bekuzzi Kibele, Bullen Vireida and Metcal area on Wednesday while people were sleeping in their homes.

National Addis Standard News magazine quoted an eyewitness as saying, “People were murdered and their homes looted.” Another eyewitness said that the residents of the area had informed the police about the attack but the attackers had fled before the police arrived.

Significantly, many tribal groups inhabit the western region of Ethiopia. Here the attackers target the people of Amhara community. The Human Rights Commission of Ethiopia confirmed the attack and called for its investigation.
