New Delhi: With the new digital rules expiring today, Facebook said today that it wants to ‘comply’ with the government’s new rules to regulate content. The company indicated that it wanted to discuss ‘issues that need more engagement.’
A Facebook spokesperson said, “Our goal is to follow the provisions of the IT rules and continue to discuss some issues that require more engagement with the government.” The statement said, “As per IT regulations, we are working to implement operational procedures and improve efficiency. Facebook is committed to the ability of people to express themselves freely and securely on our platform. “
According to government sources, so far the social media giants- Twitter, Facebook and Instagram have not followed the new rules. At present, apart from Facebook, no updates have been received in this matter from Twitter or other platforms.
Explain that the rules for news sites and OTT platforms were announced by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) on 25 February and the sites were given three months time to consider it. Sources said that if companies fail to follow the rules, they can be blocked or face criminal action.
The new rules will include a committee with representatives from the ministries of Defense, External Affairs, Home, Information and Broadcasting, Law, IT and Women and Child Development. The government will designate an officer of the level of Joint Secretary or above as an “Authorized Officer” who can direct the blocking of any content.
