TRV S Ramesh, a DMK MP accused of murdering a labourer, appeared in court this morning in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district. The DMK lawmaker said in a statement: “I will show that the accusations levelled against me are false. I surrender to avoid allowing those who criticise my leader’s good governance to have a voice. I am worried by some parties’ smear campaigns against the DMK “.. The Tamil Nadu police’s CB-CID wing has been looking for the DMK MP in connection with the suspected murder of Govindraj, who worked at his cashew processing facility last month.

The 55-year-old worker was allegedly assaulted by the congressman and others at the plant for allegedly stealing eight kilogrammes of cashews. On September 19, Govindaraj was brought to the police station in an injured state by other workers. Despite police orders to transport him to a hospital, he was allegedly returned to the cashew unit, where he was later discovered dead.

Police arrested five of his employees who were reportedly involved in the crime over the weekend. In his complaint, Govindaraj’s son stated that this was a clear instance of murder. The PMK, which is politically powerful in the region, has demanded an investigation by the CBI. They also requested that the ruling party’s MP be detained immediately.

The report has not yet been delivered to the family. Following a public outcry, the state DGP, Mr Sylendra Babu, transferred the matter to CB-CID. This is the first high-profile criminal prosecution involving a DMK politician since the party seized power in May following a landslide victory.
