A petition has been filed at the Supreme Court ahead of the next Assembly elections, asking the court to order political parties to disclose the criminal records of its candidates.
Ashwini Upadhyay, a lawyer of SC files this petition, and also requests that all candidates running for office have a clean criminal record. The petition asks the Supreme Court to direct the Election Commission of India to guarantee that the political party explains why it chose a candidate with a criminal record over someone who has never been charged with a crime.

According to the petition, the ECI must require that all political parties disclose information regarding their candidates’ criminal history. Furthermore, within 48 hours of exposing the case, all parties must justify their decision to choose a certain candidate. The petition also asks the EC to direct all political parties to publish all relevant information regarding these candidates.
It stipulates that the parties post a full explanation of each candidate’s criminal cases, as well as the reasons for their nomination, on the official website’s Home Page. The petition further stipulates that the reasons must be written in capital characters and submitted within 48 hours.

Meanwhile, there are plenty of candidates participating in upcoming elections with a criminal record and it might be interesting to hear the decision of this plea in SC.
