Varanasi: Head of the Vishwa Vedic Sanatan Sangh (VSS) Jitendra Singh Singh Visen has received a notice from the Varanasi police, official sources said on Wednesday.

Visen made the announcement for handing power of attorney on October 28 – which means a designated person is legally authorised to act for someone else – to the Chief Minister.

The police have sought a clarification from Visen for his announcement on giving power of attorney to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in connection with five cases related to Gyanvapi mosque.

The district police wanted to know whether Visen had taken the Chief Minister’s consent before making such a statement. The police sought a reply within three days of serving the notice.

Inspector of Chowk police station in Varanasi city Shivkant Mishra issued the notice to Visen on the grounds of newspaper reports which said that he had announced to give power of attorney in five Gyanvapi-related cases to the Chief Minister. The cases are pending before different courts.

According to the notice, besides the district magistrate and the commissioner of police, the state of Uttar Pradesh is a defendant in all those cases.

The notice further said that before making such an announcement, the person concerned had not taken the Chief Minister’s consent. The announcement has created confusion and doubts, because as the UP government and its local authorities are already defendants in the case, how a chief minister can be a party to it, the notice further said.

According to the notice, if Visen fails to give a clarification within the prescribed, he will face legal action. Visen said that he had received the notice and send a reply to it within the stipulated time.
