Lucknow: Policemen, sleuths of special task force (STF) and those of anti-terrorist squad arrested 57 activists of the Popular Front of India (PFI) from different locations in 26 districts of Uttar Pradesh, official sources said on Tuesday.
According to additional director general (law and order) Prashant Kumar, documents and various items confiscated during the raids are being scrutinised. The sleuths STF arrested an activist of PFI on Monday.
Sources in the police said the activist identified as Abdul Majeed had taken part in anti-national activities and provided tip offs about many other members of the organisation. A few electronic equipment and some objectionable literature linked with PFI have been seized from Majeed.
On the grounds of the information provided by Majeed, the security agencies raided various districts of Uttar Pradesh. Majeed is a resident of Kakori in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh, an STF official said. Once Majeed had been arrested and released on bail and, immediately after that, he began to work for the PFI.
He was arrested from Vibhuti Khand in Gomti Nagar area of Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. The PFI activist was expanding the network of the organisation for which he held meetings in Lucknow, Barabanki, Bahraich, Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Kanpur, Saharanpur and other places across the state.
