Lucknow: Nearly 23.36% of votes were cast in the final phase of the civic bodies’ elections in Uttar Pradesh till 12 o’clock on Thursday.

The first phase of polling took place on May 4. The results will be declared on May 13 when the outcome of Karnataka assembly polls will be announced.

The polling, being held in Meerut, Ghaziabad, Shahjahanpur, Bareilly, Aligarh, Kanpur and Ayodhya, began at 6am and is all set to continue till 6pm.

Six fake voters were caught at a polling booth in Mau district, election office said.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath tweeted: “Today is the last phase of polling for the UP municipal elections-2023. All respected voters are appealed to participate in this festival of democracy to form a triple-engine government. Do vote.”

According to BJP leaders, triple-engine government means – the party’s rule at the Centre, in the state and in local bodies.

Nevertheless, there is a hidden meaning of triple-engine government, said a Samajwadi Party leader.

He said, “It means Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.”

The municipal polls are important, since the political outfits in the state are sparing no effort to show their strength before the Lok Sabha elections to be held next year.

The residents of Shahjahanpur are voting to elect their first mayor. The mayors of Meerut and Aligarh belong to the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), but the rest of the places have BJP mayors.

Over 1.92 crore people are eligible to caste their votes in the second phase of the polling.

In the second round of polling, 39,146 candidates are in the fray for 6, 929 posts comprising seven mayors and 581 councillors.
