The criminal Zafar Ali was carrying a reward of rupees one lakh on his head. On Thursday, when a team of Moradabad police reached a farmhouse at Bharatpur village in Udhamsingh Nagar district of Uttarakhand where the goon was reportedly hiding, there was a clash between the police and a group of locals. The wife of a local leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party Gurtaj Singh Bhullar, Gurpreet, was killed and five policemen were injured in the clash.

Moradabad (UP): The Moradabad police in Uttar Pradesh laid their hands on a criminal Zafar Ali wanted in connection with illegal mining in Uttarakhand, official sources on Sunday.

On Thursday, when a team of Moradabad police reached Bharatpur village in Udhamsingh Nagar district of Uttarakhand, there was a clash between the police and a group of locals. The wife of a local leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party Gurtaj Singh Bhullar, Gurpreet, was killed and five policemen were injured in the clash.

On the heels of the incident, a case was registered against five policemen. Nevertheless, the police continued to pursue Ali carrying a reward of rupees one lakh on his head and collared him on Sunday after a brief encounter, a senior official said.

According to senior superintendent of police Hemant Kutiyal, the administration deployed several teams to catch Ali. The police arrested him in the Pakbara area of Moradabad district when he was trying to flee to Delhi. As he has sustained injuries in the leg, he has been admitted to a hospital, Kutiyal said, adding that one constable was also injured in the encounter.

According to reports, a team led by sub divisional magistrate Parmanand Singh and mining officer Ashok Kumar seized two sand-laden trucks near the Uttar Pradesh-Uttarakhand borders in Thakurdwara area of Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh. The sand illegally mined in Uttarakhand was brought to Uttar Pradesh. Nevertheless, when the officials were making papers related to the illegally mined sand, 150 men of Ali attacked them and escaped with the trucks. Immediately after the incident, an FIR was registered and a reward of Rs 50,000 was announced on Ali’s head.
