Girl threatened with rape, murder consumes poison in Lucknow

Lucknow: There seems to be no end in sight to incidents of attack on women in Uttar Pradesh. After a minor Dalit girl was violated and set afire at Madhotanda village in Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh, an undergraduate student of a private university in Lucknow consumed some poisonous substance receiving rape and death threats from six of her batchmates including three girls, the police said on Tuesday.

The incident came to light on Monday when a video clip of the girl, relating her woes from the hospital bed, went viral on social media. According to deputy commissioner of police (East Zone) in Lucknow Prachi Singh, on the ground of the complaint lodged by the girl’s brother, an FIR has been lodged against the six students and an inquiry into the incident is going on. The girl, a student of B Com third year, belongs to Mau district of Uttar Pradesh and lives in a hostel provided by the university. A third year B Tech and her roommate allegedly thrashed her and damaged her phone on September 5 in connection with a call.

She complained to the chief warden of the hostel about the incident, sources said, adding that her plaint infuriated the accused who, along with her friends, including two girls and three boys, threatened her on with murder and rape at the university canteen on September 8. According to her brother, the girl went into depression after the incident, and fearing further attack and humiliation, she consumed some poisonous substance. The girl has been discharged from the hospital.
