Auraiyya (UP): Angry Dalits set a police vehicle afire and allegedly threw stones at the cops in Achhalda area of Auraiyya district of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday in protest against the death of a 15-year-old Dalit boy because of severe beating by a teacher, the police said. 

The relatives of the boy and the members of Bhim Army initially refused to cremate the body, demanding the arrest of the teacher concerned. The teacher is at large after the incident. Hundreds of locals staged a sit-in outside the school where the boy used to study. On getting information, the police and the officials of the district administration rushed to the spot and pacified the crowd which then agreed to cremate the body of the boy. According to superintendent of police Charu Nigam, a team has been formed to arrest the teacher concerned.

Sources said that a teacher Ashwini Singh, who belongs to upper caste, thrashed the child for a spelling error in a social science test on September 7. The boy died on Monday on the way to hospital. According to the complaint lodged by the father of the boy, the teacher had brutally beaten up the boy with sticks and continued to kick him till he lost his consciousness. The teacher paid Rs 40,000 for the boy’s treatment, but he stopped receiving calls, the complainant said.

The teacher also hurled caste-related abuses at the father of the boy. On the grounds of the complaint, the police registered an FIR against the teacher.

A Dalit student had been brutally beaten up in Rajasthan for drinking water from a pitcher kept for upper caste student. He died during treatment.
