Angry customers hold a demonstration. The police said they would inquire into the case and informed the bank concerned about it.
Amethi (UP): Bank customers in Amethi district of Uttar Pradesh were shocked when an ATM started dispensing counterfeit currency notes of Rs 200 denomination, sources said on Wednesday. The present incident was against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement that he made on November 8, 2016 when banned the currency notes worth Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 denomination. He claimed that demonetisation would help the government to do away with fake currencies.
Amethi where the incident took place is the constituency of Union minister Smriti Irani. The incident came to light when people went to ATMs to withdraw cash for Diwali shopping. A video clip of a man showing a currency note dispensed by the ATM went viral on social media.
Apparently, the currency note looks identical with the original currency note of Rs 200 denomination, but if one observes it, one is able to make the differences between the fake and the original ones.
There are phrases like “Children Bank of India,” and “Full of Fun” printed on the notes. Immediately after the news spread that a few ATMs are supplying fake currency notes, a large number of people gathered there and held a demonstration.
On getting information, the police rushed to the spot and said that they would hold an inquiry into the case about which the bank concerned was informed.
