Both were accused of murdering a policeman on May 10
Jalaun: The police on Sunday gunned down two criminals who had shot dead a policeman when he was chasing them.
The incident of killing the policeman occurred recently, official sources said.
According to special director general (law and order) Prashant Kumar, Umesh Chandra and Ramesh were involved in murdering the police constable Bhedjeet Singh.
Singh, who was a constable working for the Orai police station, was shot dead in the area in the early hours of May 10 when he was chasing some bike-borne criminals on his motorcycle.
Since the criminals were trying to run away, though Singh tried to stop them, the constable without caring for his life, chased the criminals.
While Singh was chasing them, the felons fired at the policeman who died on the spot.
When the police came to know that they were standing near the factory area in Jalaun, a team rushed to the spot, Kumar said.
No sooner had they seen the police party than they opened fire, but the cops too, returned the fire in self-defence, he said.
After both of them suffered injuries in the firing, they were rushed to a hospital, where they were declared dead, Kumar said.
Orai station house officer Shiv Kumar Rathore, a member of the team that shot dead the criminals, sustained injuries in the hand during the encounter. He was provided first aid at the hospital.
