Prayagraj (UP): The walls of Bharati Bhavan Library in Prayagraj district of Uttar Pradesh were echoed with the thunderous voice of many freedom fighters during the country’s struggle for independence. According to librarian Swatantra Pandey, Brajmohan Lal Bhalla had set up the library at Loknath area of the city in 1889. A sum of Rs 1,000,00 was spent to build the library, which used to be the rendezvous freedom fighters.

Recently the library has hogged the limelight after the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation issued a notice of house tax worth Rs 2.87 lakh, but the house tax was not taken from the library earlier, sources said, adding that the library pays electricity bill through an annual state government’s grant of Rs 2, 00,000. Aside from that, the salary of Rs 2.75 lakh is paid to five employees from the interests earned through fixed deposits. If the library has to pay such a huge amount of tax, it will soon be closed, the employees said.
