Etawah: Female dacoit Sarla Jatav walked out of Etawah jail after 17 years, jail officials said on Saturday. This happened after the Allahabad High Court allowed her release on the grounds of a petition filed by her brother Vijay Singh. According to superintendent of jail Ram Dhani Singh, she was released following an order of the high court. As she was coming out of the prison, a battery of reporters was waiting outside to talk to her, but she did not talk to anyone. Her family members were accompanying her, Singh said.

She fell into the police dragnet at the Etawah railway station in 2005 when she was trying to board a train. Her life has been as colourful as that of a character in any Bollywood blockbuster. Jatav was involved in several cases of murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping and extortion and she carried a reward of Rs 1,00,000 on her hear. She fell into the hands of dreaded bandit of the Chambal ravines Nirbhay Gujjar when she was just 11. Gurjar took her to ravines. When she was 14, she tied the knot with Gujjar’s son Shyam. Although she picked up the gun culture of the ravines, she was beautiful and fond of good wears.
