Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has named Dr. Sanjay Lather as the leader of the opposition in the upper house of Uttar Pradesh. The seat was vacant after the death of veteran SP leader, Ahmad Hasan. Sanjay is the nominated MLC of the Samajwadi Party. His tenure will be over on 26th May 2022. The Secretariat of UP Legislative Council has notified the order.

Lather hails from the Jat community and is known as one of the closes to Akhilesh Yadav. Being the leader of the opposition in the Upper House, Lather will be entitled to all the facilities that the cabinet minister gets.

Lather contested from Mant
Dr. Sanjay Lather also contested the election from the Mant legislative assembly seat of Mathura but failed to win it. He was in the third position and could manage only more than 60 thousand votes. By nominating him, Akhilesh wishes to give a message to the Jat community. Akhilesh is on the way to making farming and farmers a big issue for the government and in the upcoming elections in 2024.
