Kanpur (UP): Nearly 38 years have passed since the Anti-Sikh riots erupted after the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1984, but the Special Investigation Team arrested four persons in connection with that incident on Wednesday. According to reports, the Special Investigation Team (SIT), formed to probe the anti-Sikh riots, took four persons into custody in the Ghatampur area in Kanpur Nagar district. Deputy inspector general of police Balendu Bhusan, head of the SIT, said that there would be more arrests.

Nevertheless, as the anti-Sikh riots took place nearly 38 years ago, most of the Balendu Bhusan people involved in it are above 60 years now. Those who were arrested have been identified as Saifullah Khan, 64, Vijay Narain Singh, 62, Yogendra Singh 65 and Abdul Rahman, 65. According to reports, other accused are under the scanner. The Central Government set up SIT in 2019 to reopen seven anti-Sikh riot cases. Nevertheless, the accused were either acquitted or the trial shut. Out of 94 accused identified by SIT 74 are alive. As it was an old case the SIT is taking time to find the culprits, Bhusan said, adding that they have identified 70 people.
