Centurion: Former South African captain Faf Du Plessis was highly unfortunate to miss out on a well-deserved double hundred in the ongoing Test match against Sri Lanka at the Centurion. Faf Du Plessis missed his double century by merely a run as he walked back for 199 in the first innings. In the process, the right-handed batsman became the 11th batsman to do so.

Pakistan’s Mudassar Nazar perhaps became the first batsman to be out on 199 when it took place against India back in 1984. Following that, Mohammad Azharuddin, Matthew Elliot, Sanath Jayasuriya, and Steve Waugh also joined him during the 1980s and 1990s. The 2000s saw Younis Khan, Ian Bell, Steve Smith, KL Rahul, and Dean Elgar also becoming a part of it.

Faf Du Plessis, whom Cricket South Africa (CSA) relieved of the captaincy following the home series defeat against England, played exceptionally well. The 36-year old’s 276-ball knock contained 24 boundaries as he formed century partnerships with Temba Bavuma and Keshav Maharaj to take the Proteas to a monumental total of 621. Du Plessis also shared a stand of 77 with Wiaan Mulder.
