While the BCCI’s selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, struggles to choose the team for the forthcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, the most significant uncertainty surrounding India’s preparation for the 2024 T20 World Cup in June is who will ultimately captain the team in the ICC competition.
The head selector is anticipated to address the long-standing issue, even though it is unlikely that the Aganistan contest squad would settle it. While they waited, ardent supporters of the Indian cricket team went viral on social media over a specific poster regarding the T20 World Cup. The 2024 T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States of America and the West Indies and take place from June 1 to June 29, had its schedule unveiled by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday. On June 5, India will open their campaign in New York against Ireland before hosting Pakistan in a highly anticipated match at the same location. Canada and the USA, India’s hosts, are in the same group.
Atar Sports, the official broadcaster of the ICC event, unveiled a poster featuring the India-Pakistan match after the significant announcement. Hardik represented India, and Shaheed Afridi, the recently named captain of Pakistan, was featured in the photo. Despite Hardik’s informal captaincy of the team during Rohit’s absence from the format since the 2022 T20 World Cup, the poster quickly caused confusion on social media regarding the announcement’s final details and whether or not Rohit has been replaced by the all-rounder for the T20I leadership role.
However, since November 2022, when India lost to England in the semifinals of the T20I series in Australia, the seasoned opener has not played in a T20I. Rohit and Virat Kohli decided to concentrate in November. They were not present for the three-match match in South Africa and the five-match series against Australia at home. With Hardik sidelined due to an ankle ailment, Suryakumar Yadav took the captaincy in the T20 World Cup in June, and it is unclear if they will be selected for the Afghanistan series.
The West Indies and the United States of America will co-host the 29-day competition. Six West Indies venues—Kensington Oval, Barbados; Brian Lara Cricket Academy, Trinidad; Providence Stadium, Guyana; Sir Vivian Ricard Stadium, Antigua; Draen Sammy Cricket Ground, St Lucia; Arnos Vale Stadium, St Vincent—and three USA venues—Eisenhower Park, New York; Lauderhill, Florida; and Grand Prairie, Texas—will host a total of 55 games during the event. While B and C will play their group games in the West Indies, Group A will play all of their matches in the USA.
