PoliticsBy-election: Campaigning ends for Gola Gokarannath by-poll in UP

Date:

Lakhimpur Kheri: As the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Congress have kept away from the assembly by-election in Gola Gokarannath, the fight is between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP). Campaigning for the by-poll to be held on Thursday ended on Tuesday evening. The seat has fallen vacant after the death of the BJP law-maker from the area Arvind Giri on September 6. More than 3.90 lakh voters will decide the fate of seven contestants in the fray.

The main contest is, however, between BJP candidate Aman Giri, son of Arvind Gir and SP’s former legislator from the constituency Vinay Tiwari who represented the constituency in 2012.

Giri has the sympathy wave in his favour because of the death of his father, but the BJP deployed 40 campaigners including several cabinet ministers in the constituency. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath led the BJP’s campaign.

SP’s state president Naresh Uttam Patel and national general secretary Ravi Prakash Verma, former ministers and office-holders led the party’s campaign. The SP leaders and workers launched a door-to-door campaign.
