Jointly developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), NISAR is scheduled to take to the skies in early 2024.
After the spectacular success of India’s Moon mission Chandrayaan-3, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are getting ready to launch a new space mission dubbed NISAR.
On Tuesday, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) officials touched down in India. Bill Nelson, the administrator of NASA, expressed his enthusiasm for the next week of events and talks to strengthen the partnership between the two organisations.
While in India, Nelson is likely to stop by the facilities in Bengaluru. The NISAR spacecraft, a joint Earth-observing mission between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and its Indian counterpart, will take flight 2024 from these facilities.
Five Crucial Considerations for the NISAR Space Program
Together, the two space agencies are working on a project called the NASA ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar, or “NISHAR” for short. When it launches, NISAR will be the first radar imaging satellite to employ two frequencies simultaneously.
The NISAR project will set you back ₹12,505 crore (almost 1.5 billion USD) in Indian rupees. The world’s most expensive Earth imaging satellite is the product of their joint efforts.
Launched in January 2024, NISAR will use its advanced radar imaging technology to image the Earth’s land masses and ice sheets four to six times a month, with a resolution of 5-10 meters.

The NISAR satellite is designed to research complex natural events such as landslides, earthquakes, ice-sheet collapse, volcanoes, and ecosystem changes.
Thanks to NISAR’s data-gathering operations, Scientists and professionals will better understand Earth’s natural resources, natural disaster forecasting and analysis, and crustal evolution. The data is freely accessible to everybody.
