The three people detained for their role in the gang rape of a Spanish tourist in the Dumka district, according to the Jharkhand Police, were placed under judicial custody on Sunday. The Spanish woman had been sleeping in a tent with her husband when she was allegedly gangraped on Mrach 1 at Kurumahat in the Hansdiha police station area, some 300 km from Ranchi, the state capital, according to the police. According to the police, the woman’s statement has been documented under Section 164 of the CrPC.
Superintendant of the Police Pitamber Singh Kherwar said at a press conference that the omen had a medical test that verified the rape. The Dumka gang-rape incident was extensively covered by several foreign media outlets as well. Police were looking for four more people who are suspected of pursuing the tourist and gang-rapping the woman, according to a news agency that cited the couple and the authorities. The Spanish-born couple was discovered by the police on March 1 at approximately 11 p.m. local time on a roadside, appearing to have been beaten. Pitamber Singh Kherwar, according to the media, added that the two people told officials their modesty had been outraged in a case involving seven men, but he did not provide details about the crime or identify the victims. The horrific crime brought attention to India’s high rate of sexual violence, promoted weeks of protest, and ultimately resulted in a change in the law that allowed for the depth penalty for rape, according to AFP, which emphasized the 2012 Nirbhaya case.
According to AI Jazeera, women from minority tribal communities are disproportionately vulnerable to sexual violence, which is a widespread occurrence in India. It states that low conviction rates for suspects and the social stigma surrounding speaking out about crime exacerbate the issue.
In a Saturday video interview, the couple claimed that the men had repeatedly hit the husband and sexually assaulted her. The couple claimed that because there were no hotels in the area, they had set up camp close to the scene of the attack.
In the interview, the woman, who is of Brazilian and Spanish nationality, told Spanish TV channel Antena 3 that she was raped by them and that they stayed that way for about two hours. They took turns while some watched. The couple previously released a video on their shared Instagram account, which they use to share pictures of their motorcycle trips around the globe with their barely 200,000 followers. The video isn’t accessible anymore.
