NewsViewpoint: In 2024, will Kharge be the one opposing Modi?

Date:

A noteworthy development from Tuesday’s INDIA bloc meeting was the suggested selection of Mallikaarjun Kharge as the alliance’s prime ministerial nominee. Kharge lacks a wider consensus within the India alliance, but his caste and background with the Gandhis lend his name some legitimacy. MDMK chief Vaiko claims that Kharge was chosen by Delhi Chief Minister Arvid Kejriwal and West Bengal Minister Mamata Banerjee as the alliance’s prime ministerial candidate during the “India” meeting.

Even as he ducked, Kharge still managed to sound enthusiastic. He said at a press conference held following the meeting,” Let’s win first; the PM’s face will be discussed later.

Now, all eyes are on Mayawati, the leader of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The story of the Indo-India alliance for 2024 would gain traction if Mayawati supported the idea of having the nation’s first Dalit prime minister.

One state where the BJP gained the majority of seats in both 2014 and 2019 was Uttar Pradesh. Therefore, the BJP’s high hopes from the Hindi heartland could be hurt by one person, one constituency, and a consolidation of Dalit votes.

Fighter Kharge is prepared to..

It’s interesting to note that the seasoned leader and 88th president of the AICC was a little taken aback when Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal suggested Kharge lead the alliance. However, I am not reluctant.

According to reports, Kharge said, “I have been a soldier” at the INDIA bloc meeting. I have never pursued politics on the grounds that I am a Dalit or a victim of injustice. I have always stood for equality and have not only fought for it in my capacity as a caste leader. My first priority will be to unseat Modi, after which these issues will be discussed and decisions made.

But a lot hinges on Congress’s ability to secure more than 100 seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha. Many people, both inside and outside the India alliance, believe that the performance of Congress will be the most important factor in the general election of 2024.

Kharge’s advantages.

Kharge has not turned back since winning the Congress president’s election on October 26, 2022. He gradually strengthened his hold on the organization, established himself as Gandhi’s go-to gut, and established lines of communication with the main opposition parties. He now has extra legitimacy and credibility thanks to Karnataka and Telangana.

Limitations and hazards.

Kharge’s greatest flaw is his strength. In the event that caste identity shields one from the caustic attacks of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others, the Brahmin lobby’s backward position within the Congress and the India bloc presents a significant obstacle to acceptance.

His Potential

Kharge is a perfect candidate for the position because of his background as a state minister, union minister, elected representative, and leader of the opposition in both chambers of parliament. He stands strong in a field where the BJP is weak and is impervious to the accusation of dynasty. He might turn out to be the unexpected victor in coalition promise politics.

Kharge’s ultimate approach

In his capacity as Congress president, Kharge has a lot of offers for Nitish Kumar or Mamata Banerjee, the convener of the India alliance, overseeing the election process, and completing a shared minimum program.
