Varun Kumar, a hockey player, was arrested under the POCSO Act after a 22-year-old flight attendant reported him to the Karnataka Police.
Kumar has been accused of raping a girl under the age of sixteen and infidelity under sections 420 (cheating) and 376 (3) of the Indian Penal Code, according to the first information report (FIR) submitted by the Bengaluru city police in Jnanabharthi. The FIR cites sections 4 (2), 5 (L), and 6 of the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
The victim said in the complaint that the accused started sexually assaulting and raping her when she was sixteen years old, all the while making marriage promises to her. After the death of my father a year ago, the accused came to console me, but after that, they stopped communicating with me and even ignored my calls. I decided to report him to the police, and he continued our chat.
I asked him about marriage, and he said they were both better off without partners. According to her complaint, the accused threatened the complainant with social media exposure if she continued to insist on marriage and caused him grief.
Tragically, the tragedy happened at the Sports Authority of India Coaching Centre in Jnanabharathi, Bengaluru, when a volleyball student from Hyderabad, aged 16, was being taught. She stayed at the women’s hostel. The accused met her on Instagram and immediately started contacting her.
Concurrently, the aforementioned hockey player was training in a national camp located on campus.Being a minor at the time, I chose not to reply to his communications. I chose to disregard the defendant’s attempts to bring his friends my way in an attempt to get near me. While he was on the run, the accused texted me often, expressing his anguish and threatening to end his life without me.
After his friends assured me they would treat me like a sister. The meeting with him was finally approved by me. I was not able to finalize our marriage at our meeting, no matter how hard the accused tried. According to the victim’s complaint, the accused assured her that they would be friends until he could win over her family to approve of their marriage.
He suggested having dinner at a hotel in Jayanagar Fourth Block at… After we finished eating, he led me forcibly to our bedroom. The accused had sexual relations with me against my will despite my informing him that I was a minor and that I had two elder sisters and a younger one.
After five years of committing to marriage, my love for him became stronger. While we stayed at several Bengaluru hotels, he reportedly sexually abused her for years.
According to sources inside the police department, the victim’s accusations will be thoroughly investigated and legal proceedings will be filed against those responsible.
The victim revealed many rapes perpetrated by Varun Kumar over the last five years. Following the victim’s allegation, Varun Kumar was charged with the crime and a FIR was filed at the Gyanbharti police station. Authorities said that Varun Kumar is now evading capture. The authorities are on the lookout for him.
The hockey player Varun Kumar hails from Himachal Pradesh, but now he resides in Jalandhar, Punjab. Varun made his Team India debut in 2017. They won silver the following year, in 2022, at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. He was an integral part of his country’s 2022 Asian Games gold medal winning team. He was a member of the Indian team that won bronze in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
