On Tuesday, the Defense Ministry and the state-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) inked a Rs 2,269-crore agreement for the purchase of 11 Shakti Electronic Warfare Systems and related equipment for the Indian Navy. The Indian Navy’s capital warships will have the Shakti EW System installed, according to the Ministry of Defense.

In order to purchase 11 Shakti Electronic Warfare Systems and related equipment and accessories for the Indian Navy under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) category at a total cost of Rs 2,269.54, the Ministry of Defense signed a contract with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Hyderabad, on February 13.

The project, which involves more than 155 industry partners, including MSMEs, will create 2.5 lakh man-days of employment over a four-year period, contributing to the realization of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision, the ministry stated.

EW System Shakti

The Shakti EW System is manufactured completely within India. In a densely electromagnetic environment, the Shakti EW System can precisely intercept electronic emissions and apply countermeasures.

The Indian Navy’s Capital Warships are equipped with an EW System that is designed to intercept, detect, classify, identify, and jam both conventional and modern radars. In order to maintain electronic dominance and survival on the maritime battlefield, the Shakti EW system offers an electronic layer of defense against contemporary radars and anti-ship missiles. The Indian Navy’s previous generation of EW systems was replaced by this system.

The wideband Electronic Support Measures (ESM) and Electronic Counter Measures (ECM) have been integrated with the system to protect Indian Navy ships from missile attacks. The system’s ESM aids in precisely determining the direction and eavesdropping on contemporary radars. The system has a built-in radar fingerprinting and  recording replay facilities for analysis of  post-mission.
