According to videos and photographs, the man was tied to an overturned police barrier, his hand was cut off, and his ankle and leg were shattered. According to authorities, a preliminary investigation indicates that he was slain by the Nihang Sikhs, a warrior organisation, on suspicion of insulting the Sikh holy book. Lakhbir Singh, a 35-year-old inhabitant of Cheema Kalan village in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, was the victim. Avan Kumar, the village sarpanch, and Sucha Singh, the local DSP, verified his identification.

At 5 a.m., the information was received. A video clip purporting to show the event has gone viral on social media sites, showing some Nihangs standing about while the man lies in a pool of blood next to him with his cut off left hand. As seen in the video, the Nihangs question the man where he came from and who sent him for committing blasphemy. The dead may be heard speaking Punjabi and begging with the Nihangs. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha denounced the violence and said a Nihang gang had acknowledged it in a statement. According to the report, the labourer has been with the Nihang gang for some time.
