Malappuram: PK Warrier, Managing Trustee of Kerala’s renowned Arya Vaidya School and former Chief Physician ‘Aryavaidyan’, passed away in Kottakkal on Saturday.

Padma Bhushan awardee Dr Warrier turned 100 on June 8. He led Arya Vaidya Shala to the heights of fame and glory in the last six decades.

Ever since Dr. Warrier became the head of Arya Vaidya School in 1954, his name has become synonymous with Kottakkal Ayurveda.

He was born in Kottakkal Malappuram in 1921. His parents were Thalappanna Sreedharan Namboodiri and Panniyampalli Kunchi Warrior. He was the youngest child of his parents. He was educated at Raja’s High School, Kottakkal and Zamorin High School in Kozhikode.

Dr. Warrier studied Ayurveda at Arya Vaidya Pathshala (present-day Vaidyaratnam PS Varrier Ayurveda College). He also worked with a poet and Kathakali writer Ms. Madhavikutty K. Married to Verrier. He has tried to propagate a holistic approach to the treatment of diseases through his writings and has contributed immensely to the contemporary medical literature.

Dr. Warrier wrote a five-volume treatise ‘Indian Medicinal Plants – A Collection of 500 Species’. His dedication to scientific research and documentation in Ayurveda is represented by him.

Dr. Warrier was awarded the degree of D.Litt by the University of Calicut in 1999. He was awarded the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Biography and Autobiography for Smriti Parva in 2008. The former Chief Physician was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 and Padma Bhushan in 2010 for his contribution to Ayurveda.
